Nomads march on to the Grand Championship Final

After a walkover in the quarter-finals Nomads had DEA in the semi-final. Nomads had defeated DEA twice in the league but they were always close affairs and DEA had a few experienced players wheeled out for the big match.

Nomads started brightly at first but were guilty of trying to play too much rugby before the hard work had been done and not finishing opportunities. Some silly penalties and some defensive mistakes led to DEA getting on the scoreboard first with a well worked try, moving the ball out wide. Nomads came back into the game but again patience was lacking and opportunities went a begging. Eventually the forwards took control from a driven lineout. DEA pulled it down but the forwards were patient. Several driven pick and go’s put nomads within a few metres of the tryline. Tank then pulled the defence across and popped Moses into the space, a move that is becoming his trademark, he drove through 3 defenders to score. It had taken 26 minutes but Nomads were on the score sheet. Dowsey kicked the extras.

Nomads then gave away a soft penalty. From a kick off the ref judged that nomads were cheating at their lineout drive. DEA took it quickly and put in a high kick to the wing. The wing gathered it up and scampered down the wing to score.

Nomads came back strong Calvin almost scoring in the right hand corner. Nomads kept the pressure on. Despite DEA’s best efforts to cheat, the forwards stayed strong and after more drives Tyler emerged from a pile of bodies with his 8th try in 13 games. From the kick off Nomads played their game plan to full effect, sweeping up the field with multi-phase rugby. Only desperate cheating from DEA prevented a try and they were shown a yellow card after one warning too many. From a penalty move just help short, Dowsey got the ball, used some footwork and stayed strong in the tackle and was driven over the line.

With only 5 minutes left of the half Nomads were guilty of falling asleep at the wrong time. Near their own line Nomads switched off in defense and allowed the DEA scrum half to sneak through for a try. At half time the score was 19-19.

In the half time team talk a few strong words were said and the team re-focused. This has an immediate effect as Nomads took DEA on up front from the Kick-off. DEA quickly gave penalties and soon Nomads were battering the DEA line. After yet another penalty Dowsey tapped and hit Calvin unmarked out wide for a try inside 5 minutes.

This time Nomads made no mistakes from the kick –off. They continued to dominate play. The forwards kept the pressure on DEA constantly, never letting them settle. Tank and Dowse moved the play around and Craig and Blake made big carries. The pressure led to DEA making a poor clearance kick. The forwards drove 15metres into the DEA 22. Craig carried, and then Tyler made a huge run brushing off defenders. From a quick ruck, Dowsey hit Steve standing wide and flat. He ran between two defenders to score and start to take the game away from DEA.

DEA then had a period of pressure. However, they forced things as they chased the game and Nomads stayed composed. Even losing Blake for a Yellow Card had little effect. If anything it galvanized the team and soon they were putting DEA under pressure again. Mike Crosse came on and put the ball deep into the corners. DEA were forced to kick and Angus, Calvin and Chris were in their element counter attacking. Soon they were on the DEA tryline as DEA leaked penalties. Moses got the ball from a ruck and drove over for his second.

There was one more try to come as the pattern of the second half was repeated. DEA lost composure in attack, Nomads counter attacked and DEA gave away penalties. After more pressure Crossy dived over for the final try of the afternoon. That was how it stayed and Nomads go onto the semi-final after a confident second-half. Final score Nomads 45- DEA 19.

Nomads defeat the PLA

February 18, 2011

Nomads turned up on a chilly Februaury day to play the PLA at King’s Park, in what was potentially a tough fixture. The PLA had defeated DEA, who are lying one place below Nomads, just before Chinese New Year. Nomads also had several injuries and unavailability’s form the side that defeated HKFC. Hat-trick scoring Fly-half Mike Crosse was out so half back partner Stephen Dowse moved to fly-half and Tank Lam started at scrum-half. The try scoring machines that are Calvin and Angus were b...

MOM awards V HKCC

January 26, 2011

 3 points – Mike Crosse

Crossy ran the game from 1st 5/8th, as he calls it. He had a hand or two in almost every try scored. Inspirational words and even more inspirational tackling meant he was the most influential man on the field.

2 points – Will Wong

Carried hard all day and got nomads moving forward. He is great under the high ball and instills confidence in those around him from kick offs. He had a huge tackle count and large turnover count. Represented the massive forward e...

Nomads fly high…. Again

January 26, 2011
Nomads 61 HKCC 24

Nomads turned up at <?Aberdeen to play HKCC Exiles with a significantly altered team from that which had defeated DEA the week before. With both French second rows (Remi and Romain) on strike the pack had to be re-jigged with Garrett bravely being volunteered by someone else to play second row and Bill making a return to the starting team. In the backs both centres were out. David had to research something and Captian Craig was still getting over his first and last fitne...

MOM Awards V DeA Tigers

January 20, 2011
3 points- Remi

Having his best season to date and this game was no different. Remi works very hard in the loose but this week added some extra go forward in his game. Two of his breaks at key moments in the game lead to tries. Huge work ethic and a well respected player.

2 points- Damian 'Moses' Bailey

The South African made his debut for Nomads and added some extra 'edge' to the team. In true SA fashion he is a very combative player which fits in well with the Nomads spirit. Moses managed to f...

Nomads start the New Year with a Bang

January 19, 2011

Nomads kicked off their first game of the New Year with a commanding display over league table rivals DEA. The teams went into the match level on points but it was Nomads who walked away saftisfied.

The players turned up focused and the pre-match routine was the best of the season. The game kicked off with DEA having most of the opening territory and possession, due in part to their Fly-half who clearly had put in some kicking practice over the Christmas break. However, Nomads defence w...

MOM Awards V Mustangs

3 points- Blake

The American Football convert is really starting to feel comfortable on a rugby pitch. Blake is learning all the time but due to his athletic approach it seems if he has played rugby all his life. Blake scored twice at the weekend which proves he has an eye for a score. Put this alongside his big hits and storming forward runs then you have a gifted player.

2 points- Romain

Romain is new to the second row but he goes about his business in a stealth like manner. Romain is always ...

MOM Awards V CWB Sharks

November 30, 2010
3 Points- Calvin

Was a threat in attack throughout the whole game. Always made yards deep into the CWB half which resulted in Calvin scoring a try. Was also good in defence with fine tackling out wide.

2 Points- Garrett

Produced another fantastic defensive display. Rutless at the breakdown and put in some big hits.

1 Point- Will Wong

Playing with an injury he put in a massive shift in attack and defence. His work rate is very high which is a great example to the whole team.

Nomads Back To Winning Ways

November 30, 2010

After a narrow defeat last week, Nomads were looking to bounce back and secure winning points against CWB Sharks in a division which is proving highly competitive.

From the restart, Chris Lin latched onto a loose ball and charged towards the try line. The covering defender managed to get in front of the referee who had then decided the ball had  been held up despite the fact that everyone else on the pitch saw that Chris had actually grounded the ball.

From the resulting scrum, the pack se...

MOM Awards V Kowloon

November 23, 2010
3 points- Tyler

The big Candian had his best game of the season so far V Kowloon. Tyler led the lineout well and was solid at scrum. With big line breaking carries and hard hitting tackles, Tyler deserves to take the 3 points this week. Long may this powerful display continue

2 points- Remi

Remi produced a tireless performane and constantly put his body on the line. Remi was aggressive at the breakdown but also very subtle in the lineout. As a new lineout jumper, he looked very comfortable and f...
